During our group meeting on Friday we got to get to know each other a little and talk about some of the potential positions or roles that would be needed in a small scale website development project. After some discussion, we came up with four generalized roles that would need to be filled:
- A project manager who would oversee the entire process and and give direction when needed. The project manager would also handle most of the client relations/
- An art director who would be responsible for creating the Photoshop layout of the website and assist in the use of CSS to style the actual site.
- An HTML/CSS coder who would recreate the Photoshop layout in HTML, with Dreamweaver in our case, and use CSS to layout and style the pages.
- A Content Manager who would organize the client’s content, information, etc. and write copy if needed. Also the content manager will help the HTML coder integrate the content into the layout and organization of the website.
For our group we determined that the best roles for each of us would be:
Mike Irish – Project Manager
Andrew Downs – Art Director
Mike McGovern – HTML/CSS Coder
Emily Jackson – Content Manager
Although we have assumed individual roles, we will all be somewhat involved in each aspect of the project. This is a good practice for several reasons. The first is that everyone can have input in all areas of the project and no one will feel left out of any part of the process. This way we can decide on things as a team. Another reason why this is a good strategy is that in the event that a member of the team is unable to perform their responsibility, the other team members will be up to speed and ready to step in and pick up the slack. I believe that it is always a good idea in any project or workplace to train several people to do all jobs. In doing so you will be bettered prepared when issues inevitably arise.
